Welcome to the Suicide Prevention Week 2010

Makro Foundation (MaFo) in collaboration with Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research are promoting the worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicide by organizing a weeklong awareness program from “4th September 2010- 10th September 2010” to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2010.

The objective was to increase Community awareness to the issue of stigmatization against suicide, raise awareness and to encourage and advocate help-seeking behavior on the issue that death through suicide is avoidable.

Suicide is an important public health problem and is a leading cause of death amongst teenagers and young adults. On average, almost 3000 people commit suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end his or her lives.

World Suicide Prevention Day is marked globally on September 10 each year. The international theme for 2010 is "Suicide Prevention in Different Cultures”. It is more than a day about suicide prevention. It is a day to celebrate life, to remind everyone why we should all value our lives as people, and “We need to encourage each other that anything is possible, that the darkest of times never last, and to remember that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The day was first marked in 2003, when the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization designated September 10.

Outcome: The series of eventsorganised to raise awareness through Collaboration and partnerships between communities, practitioners about suicide being a major preventable cause of premature death. Around 600 people participated directly in the events.
