AWARENESS AND SENSITISATION OF STUDENTS ROAD SAFETY

The Objective:
· To show solidarity for people affected by Road Traffic Accident
· Support the case Accident Prevention
· Generate awareness that Road Accident is Preventable

 Session Content
In all schools the session started with a round of Introduction.
Followed by an Introduction about Makro Foundation-its goal and objectives by Ms. Aparna G. Adhikari- Operations Manager Makro Foundation, COVA introduction by Mr. Shakeer
A brief introduction about purpose of the program

a)  Introduction:
A brief introduction about Hyderabad, its demography. Hyderabad has 90 lakh population with 28 lakhs vehicles in GHMC area. By 2015 --45 lakh vehicles is projected to run in GHMC. Every day 500 vehicles get registered in the city (6 months old sts).
b) Definition of  traffic: Traffic is movement of object from one place to another
Types of road Users: Pedestrians,  Animals,  Animal Driven carts, Man Driven Carts,  Automobiles  2 or 3or 4 wheelers- machine run vehicles. Aims: ensure free flow of traffic and to reduce accidents and ultimately safety of people.

 c) Question Posed:
a) Where and how should you cross the road:
Zebra Crossing-black and white
b) What should you do if there is no pedestrian crossing?
First look Right-left _Right …and when there is no traffic movement cross the road walk briskly and avoid running or slowly waling on road.
c) Where should you walk on the road?
On Footpath
d) If there is no footpath where do you walk?
On right Side where you see the vehicle on coming in front of you and walk on the edge of the road. .

d) The Silent language of Traffic Signal:   

  • Red Light- Stop the vehicle before stop line, 
  • Yellow Light- Slow down the vehicle .Get ready to go or stop. If you are near or just crossed the stop line go ahead. While going oin green if you are abt 10-15 
  • Green Light – Go

f) Dos’ and Don’ts

1. Stop before stop line before zebra crossing not before stop line
1. Don’t talk on mobile while driving
2. Don’t cross on Red signals.
3. Don’t park in no parking If done we will lock the vehicle
4. Don’t go in No entry
5.  No of children in auto are only-6 school children. And 4 Adults
6. Cross the road in zebra crossing taking help of adults
7. In two wheelers only two people not 5- 6 people.
8. Don’t take heavy loads in auto/trucks
9. Use Helmets while driving
10. Don’t over speed your vehicle. In Hyderabad  

g) More Road Accidents facts
 Few hundreds are killed by terrorism every year***Countries are spending billions of and trillions of dollar in that but no one is thinking about Road Accidents. Every year 1,15,000 persons die in Road Accidents in India, 50% are school children. Children can help by following Traffic Rules

Videos clippings of Accident are also inclded in the session to give an impact of Real Accident on youth-The Session ended with summarization of presentation, giving of booklets, biscuit packets to children, followed by Vote of thanks by Ms. Aparna G. Adhikari from Makro Foundation.

Recommendation:
· More program like this
· Traffic Commandos were not there in schools, They requested if their schools could be included in the next season of trainings of School Traffic Commandos including some jackets for the commandos in the training.
