Collapsing driver's prudent act prevents tragedy

TNN | Dec 6, 2014, 02.26 AM IST

GUNTUR: The driver of an APSRTC bus saved the lives of about 30 passengers after he suddenly fell ill while driving on the highway near Sattenapalle in Guntur district on Friday. The driver identified as Regula Koteswara Rao developed low blood pressure and sensing trouble he steered the bus from the highway into the nearby fields.

Although the bus hit an electrical pole before coming to a standstill, the driver's sensible act in slowing down the vehicle prevented what could have been a major accident. The passengers rushed the sick driver to a local hospital, where he recovered after a couple of hours. According to reports, the incident took place when Koteswara Rao was taking passengers to Piduguralla from Vijayawada.

Reportedly, the driver felt giddiness due to sudden drop in the blood pressure. Even while collapsing on the steering, Koteswara Rao made every effort to reduce the speed of the vehicle. Noticing trouble, the passengers began shouting for help. But within a few minutes, the bus came to a halt after hitting an electrical pole.

While passengers thanked Koteswara Rao, APSRTC officials complimented him for his effort to save the lives of passengers even as he struggled with ill health.

It’s good that  the driver had presence of mind and was able to control the bus and take it to the sides.. however its important that APSRTc ensures that the general health condition of drivers of buses needs to be checked periodically as it can help in prevention of accidents and save lives.
